Le Clos – Terroir Basalte

The estate’s wide range of terroirs prompts the technical teams to seek out the ideal alchemy between soils and grape varieties. At Nizas, Syrah reigns supreme. When you see how this grape variety expresses itself in the granite of the Rhone Valley, you gain a better understanding of why it occupies nearly all of the estate’s basalt plots.

Description

Winemaking techniques

Pre-fermentation cold maceration for Syrah and Mourvèdre, night-time harvesting to stay below 12°C, in an inert vat for around five days. The vats are racked several times a day to release the aroma precursors and colour. The temperature is increased to promote a spontaneous beginning to fermentation. Once fermented, the marc cap is worked on to achieve the desired level of tannic extraction.

Tasting notes

Soft and sensual, revealing intense red fruit notes. The fruit and spice of the Syrah is balanced out by the softness of the old Grenache and the vibrancy of the Mourvèdre, creating a resolutely Mediterranean, generous and precise wine.
